The latest Google Maps update: new logo, better navigation, more experiences
If you woke up this morning with a new Google Maps icon on your phone, you’re not alone. Yesterday, Google announced an updated look for the Google Maps app on Android and iOS in honor of its 15th anniversary. Here’s a look at what’s new for Google Maps, beyond a shiny new logo.
When Was The Last Google Maps Update?
Google’s last major update to Google Maps occurred on October 24, 2018. This update included features such as Follow a Business, Group Planning, Your Match, and more Explore tab enhancements. In today’s Google Maps 15th Anniversary update, we’re seeing improvements to some of these past features.
What is New in Google Maps?
Google Maps now includes a new logo, 5 quick access tabs, better public transportation information and updates to Live View directions. Here is an overview of all the new features in the February 2020 Google Maps update.
New Feature: Google Maps Tabs
In this update, Google added five quick access tabs: Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute, and Updates.
Explore: In the Explore tab users can search for local information and businesses. Local business information such as ratings, reviews, and more will be available for over 200 million worldwide locations including restaurants, attractions, and city landmarks.
Commute: The Commute tab allows users to set their daily commute and get real-time traffic updates, travel times, and suggestions for alternative routes. This tab caters to all types of commuters, car, public transportation, or other.
Saved: The Saved tab is a central location for users to find their saved locations, plan group events, and share recommendations on places they’ve visited in the past.
Contribute: The Contribute tab allows users to share local knowledge in order to keep Google Maps up to date. This includes things like adding business reviews and photos, making suggested edits, and updating details about roads and addresses.
Updates: The Updates tab provides users with a feed of trending businesses from local experts and publishers. This tab also connects users with businesses to get questions answered quickly through a chat tool.
Better Public Transit Information
Google Maps started working on crowd predictions last year for public transportation rides. In the latest Google Maps update, users will now be able to see information on the following topics:
- Temperature
- Accessibility
- Women’s Section
- Security Onboard
- Number of Carriages Available (Japan only)
All of this information comes from past rider data. The more users share about their ride experiences the more information users will have available to them.
Expanding Live View Directions
Last year, Google Maps introduced the AR feature, Live View. With this recent update, Google Maps expanded Live View to show users how far away and which direction a place is in. This is the start of many new tests Google Maps will be rolling out for Live View.
